This week is National Careers Week – so to mark the occasion, I am sharing my career journey in the hopes I can inspire some people to follow their dreams and realise that anything is possible!
When I was growing up, I always wanted to be an accountant as I was motivated by the money! However, my first official job was as a waitress at the Little Chef.
I then went to university to get my Accounting and Management Control degree before working in the financial industry for 20 years.
Ironically, after 20 years in accountancy I went back to my roots of hospitality when I opened Sarah’s Coffee Shop in 2020. Now, in 2024, I have two coffee shops and a mobile coffeebox to serve you all delicious coffee from.
I always wanted to start my own business and I knew there was a gap in the market on Severalls Business Park because when I worked there in a previous job, I could never get a decent coffee throughout my working day.
My favourite thing about my job now is chatting to customers! When I am in the shops, I usually end up getting side tracked chatting to people – I love hearing about what our customers are up to and how their businesses and lives are going.
I feel very lucky to be where I am today, especially as opening a business in the middle of a pandemic was a big risk. My staff and customers are amazing and I am very proud of what we have created.
If you are one of the many people considering a career switch and chasing your dreams, then I would say do it! Remember that you will only regret the things you don’t do, not the things you do.
I am also participating in Enterprise Day at St Joseph’s College on Monday 18th March with my coffeebox. I will be talking to the students about how my business idea came to be and how I developed my brand into what it is today. Hopefully I will inspire the next generation of business leaders!
I hope to see you at Sarah's Coffee Shop for a cuppa and a chat soon – be sure to let me know if my career journey has inspired you to follow your dreams!
